Today, I have ordered Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting It Right When You Have To by Sian Beilock. She is an Associate Professor of Psychology at The University of Chicago and an expert on the brain science behind “choking under pressure” and the many factors influencing all types of performance: from test-taking to public speaking to your golf swing.

I'm not sure it is that bad. After all there are new gold medalists, new Nobel Laureates, and new Presidents all the time. They didn't "choke" on the way there.

that's true. for at least some people this choking does not seem to be a big problem. I'll write more about the book here when I've read.
