I really like #3 except that it's not just about children. In my life as an adult, I notice that I only develop as my environment demands development. Lately it's been demanding a LOT of development...and I notice that underneath my grumpiness about having lost the easy benefits of familiar routines there is a blossoming of excitement about new capabilities.
